The awareness of research ethics by the dental hygiene department professors

Abstract
Objectives. The purpose of this study was to examine the Professors, who teach the Dental Hygiene Program in Korea, on the awareness of the research ethics andcheck their educational backgrounds on research ethics during their past academic studies, in an attempt to provide and promote a basic foundation for future education and regulations in research ethics.

Methods. The subjects in this study were total of one hundred and sixty fine full time professors and part time professors registered on Dental Hygiene Department professors association as of July 2010. Research materials were collected by mail, telephone call with the Department Dean and research assistant, fax, email, and walk in visitation from September 2010 to December 15th 2010.

Results. 66.1% of respondents, which is more then majority, have never taken a research ethic education during their university years or continuing education courses provided by Korean Dental Hygienists Associations. Regarding the correlation between plagiarism in dissertation, citation styles, and redundant publication, plagiarism in dissertation and redundant publication had a statistically significant correlation of .370 which was the highest correlation factor (p£¼0.01).

Conclusions. Education on research ethic should be provided and reinforced not only tothe current dental hygiene academic faculties, but also to the dental hygiene students who are the next future professors and researchers of this field. Also, rules and regulations on research ethic should be more publicized and educated through websites, educational institutions, and associations just like other foreign universities.
